The Turil Story
We grew up in Pune, the cultural capital of Maharashtra, where the Ganapati festival has brought communities together for generations. Every year, like many others, we would gather at the riverbank on the final day of celebrations to immerse the Ganapati idols, a moment of devotion shared by the entire community.
But over time, we began noticing something troubling.
The river we once cherished was no longer the same. What had once been fresh and vibrant had slowly turned dark and lifeless, more like a drain than a living river.
We wanted to understand why.
In our search for answers, we spoke with Dr. Pramod Moghe, a renowned environmental scientist at the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL). What he shared with us was eye-opening.
Every day, each person unknowingly releases around 55 grams of toxic chemicals into the environment through everyday household products, cleaners, toothpaste, and cosmetics.
Much of this flows untreated into our rivers and lakes, reducing oxygen levels in the water and triggering harmful blooms like water hyacinth.
This contaminated water eventually reaches our farms, enters our food systems, and ultimately our bodies, contributing to health concerns ranging from skin disorders to respiratory illnesses.
The problem was serious. But the solution was already within reach.
Dr. Moghe had developed cleaning formulations made using food-grade ingredients like vinegar, citric acid, and herbal extracts, ingredients that clean effectively while remaining far safer for people and the environment.
That insight changed how we looked at everyday products.
We realized that meaningful change doesn’t always require waiting for large systems to shift. Every household can make a difference simply by choosing what goes down the drain.

The turtle became the symbol for Turil.
